Mark Edward Smith, 1957-2018. This loss is felt keenly here at the Week In One Song, as The Fall has been my favorite band for almost two decades. MES died with his boots on, and he and his ever-changing cast of bandmates kept conjuring up caustic, warped visions for over four decades.
The man’s guiding advice from 37 years ago still stands: “Are you doing what you did two years ago? Yeah? Well, don’t make a career out of it.”
RIP.
