Amid all the (justified) hype about big data and statistical experimentation, we should remember that statistics can also be used to optimize an organization’s ability to ruin some people’s lives. This general point will not be news to any student of political science, of course, but somehow it caught me by surprise, perhaps because I’ve generally been happy with all the celebration of statistics we’ve been seeing in the business press in recent years.
