Where the Super Committee’s members stand

- August 11, 2011

Curious about the members of the Super Committee–or at least those who have already been named?  One helpful place to start is Stanford Professor Simon Jackman’s ideal point estimates for current members of the House and Senate.  As the credible intervals indicate, there is considerable uncertainty around the specific ideal points and thus the rankings.  I wouldn’t bet much that co-chair Patty Murray is exactly the 9th most liberal Senator (rather than, say, the 11th), or that co-chair Jeb Hensarling is precisely the sixth most conservative Representative.  But you can certainly get a sense of how the committee members fall on this one dimension relative to one another and to their respective chambers.  (And if you are interested in where they fell on specific votes, be sure to see VoteView on the current House and Senate.)
