I remember when I heard that Ronald Reagan had appointed a guy named Ling to be Secretary of Agriculture, I thought, Cool—-he appointed an Asian. Then it turned out that it was actually a white guy named Lyng.

Somewhere I’ve seen Jeremy Lin’s name misspelled “Linn” repeatedly, as if by compulsion. There are lots of white people with the double N, seemingly of various origins. A bit like Lee in that regard.
I know a white guy named John Ling (German ancestry, I believe). He used to talk about job interviews where the company lost interest when their representatives met him in person and realized he wasn’t an Asian American who would count toward their diversity quotas.
