Presidential Passover

in Frivolity

Lee was always good about posting in and around the high holy days, often in frivolous fashion. Here is one from Passover a couple years ago. In his memory, I take up this mantle.

“But, John,” you think. “You’re not Jewish.” Indeed, as a Southern Protestant preacher’s son, I’m pretty far from Jewish. But I am uniquely qualified to note this New York Times story, which describes the Obamas’ participation in a Seder. (And hat tip to Chris Deering for highlighting the story.)

Much like the Obamas, I too have been a Passover interloper. This has its costs: I’m sure many of the traditions were somewhat lost on me. But it also has its benefits: I was Seder-ing with a bunch of Episcopalians, and this meant that we drank pinor noir, not manischewitz.

You should come by the Hillel, they’re having seders on Monday and Tuesday night.

At our seder tonight, we drank a 2007 Barkan Chardonnay, an Israeli wine that is Kosher for Passover. Certainly not the most memorable wine of my life, but definitely passable, and a hell of a lot better than Manischewitz.
