I spent 4 years looking at the history of the words “liberal” and “conservative”, and how their meaning has changed over time. We also tackled the concept of “red states” and “blue states”. The results were American Feud: A History of Conservatives and Liberals (www.americanfeud.org) where one of the wisest of our many wise interview subjects concluded that these divisions were “artifacts of the industrial era” and we now live in a post industrial world. These challenging times of ours call for a purple approach.
hmm. but it is also interesting to see the shift (on the amazon chart) from 2004 to 2008. from a quick glance, it is immediately evident that book buying has gotten *more* conservative.
