Iran’s Competitive Authoritarianism

Is there any authoritarian regime that has such competitive executive elections as Iran’s? Has there ever been?

That is Matthew Shugart.  More here.  For more on competitive authoritarianism, see this piece by Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way.

Not as competitive as it looks if you remember all those candidates who were barred from running.

they were 8 candidates…. and how many are there in UK or USA?

Can you stand as a presidential candidate in your country?

I’d say that the degree of competition–by which I mean the general decline of the largest share over time (see graph at my post), not substance of what the candidates represent–is all the more striking when you consider how many candidates are barred from running in the first place.

    Thanks for the link, John!
