Statistics in the subway


A friend who works for the MTA points us to this app for tracking the trains. All the available data are here. She writes, “There must be an inquisitive stats student who’d like to start crunching all this data.” Indeed.

    I’m waiting for a paper to use subway delays on a major line as an IV to measure the business impact on coffee shops that cater to commuters…

    I’ll bet there’s a strong relationship between subway delays and percent of the vote for the winning candidates for Mayor of New York City over the past twenty years. I’ll also bet that there’s also an inverse relationship between subway delays and per capita sanitation expenditures. Let’s get that student to work!
