John links to a blog by Danny Hayes noting the short time frame of media attention on shootings and gun control.
And we can understand how this happens as we do the same thing. Before an election, the Monkey Cage is full of horse-race coverage, after it’s full of analysis, during a health-care debate we have lots of posts on health care, when a Supreme Court judge retires we’re full of speculation about possible replacements, etc. And we don’t have much coverage of gun politics except after a shooting. This all makes sense: we want to be part of the conversation, we want to be topical.
It’s a bit sobering, when lamenting problems with the media, to realize that we are the media too.
