The Irish Times published an “obituary”:http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/obituaries/2011/0820/1224302754108.html yesterday. He was best known in the US for his work with Richard Katz on party organization – their book on the topic is a classic. Its lessons about how party organization has changed over time are still relevant. More recently, he had done work on political parties in the European Union and EU governance more generally. I didn’t know him very well (I met him when I was a graduate student, and exchanged occasional emails with him thereafter), but had a strong impression from my limited encounters of a kind and highly intelligent scholar. He died much too young, and I know he will be greatly missed.
