Tennis at San Quentin

Political scientist and tennis player Marc Howard reports on a day playing with prisoners at San Quentin.  Here is one quote:

Ironically, it was a group of convicted felons who were perhaps the best-behaved and most ethical group of competitors I have ever witnessed.

This is not surprising. I teach a college writing class in Attica, and the students there are the most dedicated, driven, and insightful people I’ve ever had in a classroom.

You’re kidding, right? If you were in prison, with nothing else to focus on, what are you gonna do? I get the chance to play tennis or go to writing class, I am gonna milk that for whatever it is worth. There is nothing noble there.
