Voices from Bosnia and Serbia on the Arrest of Mladic

- May 26, 2011

As is now being widely reported in the media, “Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic has been arrested”:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/27/world/europe/27ratko-mladic.html. “Radio Free Europe-Radio Liberty”:http://www.rferl.org/ has a “great video”:http://www.rferl.org/video/19492.html up on its website that records residents of Sarajevo and Belgrade and their reactions to the arrest.

<object><embed src=”http://www.rferl.org/flash/MediaPlayer.swf?cache=” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” wmode=”transparent” width=”512″ height=”357″ allowfullscreen=”true” flashvars=”configFilePath=http://www.rferl.org/GetFlashXml.aspx?param=19492|user|video%26skin=embeded” /></object>

It is very interesting to see the different responses, but there is a common theme even across those who approve and disapprove of the action: Serbia’s desire to join the EU undoubtedly played a key roll in facilitating the arrest. It is also interesting to note the parallels to the questions being asked about Pakistani intelligence forces and Osama bin Laden: how could the Serbian government not have know where he was all this time?
