Academia.edu

Apropos of my post on ungating research, Scott McClurg suggests Academia.edu. Its purpose is:

Academia.edu helps academics answer the question ‘Who’s researching what?’:
– You can find people with similar research interests to you
– You can keep track of the latest developments in your research area – the latest papers, talks, blog posts and status updates
– You can create an easy-to-maintain academic webpage, listing your research interests and any papers you have written.

I don’t know if its better than those resources per se, but it is not exactly the same thing. Because it is basically a social networking tool, it can also create opportunities for finding people you don’t already know about by learning about whom others follow, etc.

I don’t think the site is close to reaching its potential yet, for what its worth. And it seems to have really caught on in Europe much more so than the US.
